Artist: Mike Brito
He developed a passion for the American flag and what it represents around the world. This passion for the flag developed into a dedication of one branch of his artwork. This subject became the focus of his typical representation of repeated imagery in a collection of creative works in his early career. This imagery is derived from "things the mind already knows," as a Neo-Dada movement with “ready-made”, utterly familiar icons such as flags, nails, stenciled numbers, maps of the U.S. Discarded objects were retrieved with a creative interpretation of how they could be incorporated into a work of art. He has woven random objects like driftwood, paint brushes, windows, spikes, hinges and other hardware retrieved from many places including demolitions into the fabric of his artwork dedicated to the flag of the United States of America.
The collection embraces his passion for the Abstract Expressionism movement. The two-dimensional flag is projected into 3D artwork through the creative and careful placement of the commonplace random objects displayed in his works that include hammers, railroad spikes, bike chains, door latches, saw blades, roofing nails and bolts into a dynamic compositional technique evolving from his creative spirit.
In Mike Brito’s work, “The 2 Flags”, he reaches to show his love for his native land Brazil conjoined with his gratitude to be part of the USA and all that it stands for around the world. The meaning of the USA flag in Mike’s art suggests the extent to which the "meaning" of this subject matter may be fluid and open to continual reinterpretation.
